Why is it so crucial to develop this competency? Let’s recall the rationale behind it. 

To provide students with opportunities to engage in authentic tasks, and to prepare students for real-life situations when exploring various types of texts and producing texts. To equip students with strategies to help them listen to, read and view texts with success.

These tasks:

  • replicate challenges faced in the real world when using texts;
  • lend to constructing one’s own responses (rather than selecting from those presented);
  • call for the creation of personalized products that showcase the skills and knowledge acquired through competency development.

This competency enables students to:

  • explore and make use of various types of texts in a dynamic way; 
  • develop appropriate strategies for effective listening and reading; 
  • learn how to contruct the meaning of texts; 
  • discover English-language culture;
  • use information and language from texts in various contexts; 
  • show their understanding in meaningful tasks.
